What to expect

The preserve is located on an Appalachian foothill named UNTAMED Mountain. Our location is nestled away and offers a picturesque ascent via a rustic dirt and gravel drive, leading you right to our parking area. Please go slow up the drive.  Most guests spend about 2 hours on a walkabout. The terrain is dirt and uneven at times, please watch your footing, as your admission to the preserve releases TFTWAP of all liability.  There are signs up directing to the paths of least resistance. If you need assistance call ahead of time or speak to someone in the admissions booth and we will decide the best way to make your walk on the wild side a great adventure. The trails in the lower preserve are much like nature trails, if you are bringing a stroller, we do recommend a jogging stroller. Wheelchairs will have difficulty, although many people have made it through, the lower preserve is not wheelchair friendly. Please call ahead of time to make arrangements for us to assist. We do not rent strollers or wheelchairs.

Your trek will begin at The Animal Contact Yard, that is home to our capybaras, Tootles the camel, Willie Nelson and Toby Keith our Scottish Highland Cows, and many other barnyard animals that are always eagerly waiting to see visitors.

Make sure you stop and use the bathroom before you head into the preserve, it is a long walk back up. Grab a wild bite or a refreshing beverage at the Dragonfly Cafe.  Just across from our new Education/Event Building are two magnificent stone Imperial Guardian Lion Statues. This is where the Untamed Pathway begins. Once on the Pathway to your right is our Big Cat Playground, a 2 acre plus fenced in wooded area that we rotate the animals to for enrichment and play. On your left are our farmyard animals and radical tire mountain for the goats to play on.

As you enter the preserve you will be greeted by some silly black bears and a pack of Timber Wolves. The habitats all have educational signage on them. Take a moment and get to know our ambassadors, they enjoy watching the guests and many of them will respond to their name. The preserve is home to 8 species of wild cats, the North American Black Bear and the Brown Bear, Wolves, Foxes and other small predatory animals. Most of the preserve is in the shade, during the summer months misters are on for the animals and our guest. We encourage sunscreen and you're welcome to bring your own beverages (NO STRAWS) and pack a picnic and eat next to the Big Cat Playground. The preserve was planned so that visitors could see a working facility. The feed truck is often out on route when we are open. Guests are welcome to watch the process and ask questions, but please stay 10 foot back from the feed truck.

On the weekends (during warmer months) we offer Capybara Encounters. Enjoy the world's biggest rodent. Meet our capybaras in an up-close setting. Enjoy an educational encounter in the Capybara's new enclosure at the children's contact yard.
